IO was originally composed for brass quintet in 1991, commissioned by the Belgian Brass Soloists.
In 2004, the composer arranged it for brass ensemble and percussion, and later for woodwind quintet. In 2010, Houthandel Antwerpen included this latest version on the CD “Kicking Sawdust”, together with Henderickx's Circus Suite.
The title IO refers to Jupiter's moon IO, where enormous volcanic explosions take place. The work has a powerful, energetic atmosphere, exploiting the instruments to their full potential.
The structure of this composition consists of three parts:
1. agitato
2. misterioso
3. feroce
