IO was originally composed for brass quintet in 1991, commissioned by the Belgian Brass Soloists. In 2004, the composer arranged it for brass ensemble and percussion - Belgian Brass recorded this work on CD in 2008 - and later for woodwind quintet. The title refers to Jupiter's moon IO, where enormous volcanic explosions take place. The work has a powerful, energetic atmosphere, exploiting the instruments to their full potential. The structure of this composition consists of three parts: 1. agitato 2. misterioso 3. feroce
