The Seven Chakras

for saxophone quartet (and live electronics)

year of composition

2009

duration

ca. 35'

text
This composition is based on the work of the same name for string quartet, which was written in 2004 on commission from the Spiegel String Quartet and De Singel in Antwerp. The original work forms the first part of the Tantric Cycle, a series of compositions based on Eastern philosophy and Buddhism. They are a continuation of compositions such as the three Ragas. THE SEVEN CHAKRAS is a work that can be performed with live electronics. The integration of lighting effects is also possible for live performances. The composition consists of seven parts: 1. Muladhara (Earth) 2. Svadhisthana (Water) 3. Manipura (Fire) 4. Anahata (Air) 5. Vishuddha (Ether) 6. Ajna (Third Eye) 7. Sahasrara (Lotus) Each of the parts has an extra-musical source of inspiration. Suggestive elements aim to bring the listener into a meditative, contemplative atmosphere.
