text
LAMENTO was originally composed in 1994 for four bassoons. In 2010, this work was rewritten for four baritone or alto saxophones or four bass clarinets and later also for four violoncellos.
A lamento is a lament. This work therefore has a sad, melancholic character.
It is a short, one-movement work consisting of three sections.
The first section is characterised by polyphonic imitations of the four saxophones.
In the second section, the solo in the first baritone saxophone, with ornamentations that refer to ethnic music, is accompanied by a bourdon in the low saxophones.
The last section starts from a homophonic setting that culminates in a free aleatoric passage.
