2 Nocturnes

2 NOCTURNES for flute (or oboe or clarinet in Bb or bassoon or alto oboe or alto saxophone) and piano was composed in 1993 on the occasion of the birth of Ruben, the eldest son of Wim Henderickx. It was the compulsory work for the Gemeentekrediet National Music Competition. Commissioned by the Ministry of the Flemish Community and The Banff Centre for the Arts in Canada, this work was rewritten in 1994 for flute, violin, viola, cello and double bass. In 1999, Wim Henderickx made an arrangement for the Charlemagne Orchestra - conducted by Bartholomeus Henri Van de Velde - for flute and string orchestra. The work consists of two separate parts, bathed in an intimate, dreamy atmosphere. The letters of his name Ruben are used as the melodic basis (theme): R (=re), U (=ut, do), B (=si mol), E (=mi), n H (=si), enderickx On a melodic and harmonic level, use is made of the overtone series (Bb and B ). A vague, almost improvisational rhythm and colouristic instrumentation contribute to the poetic character of this work.
