text
IL PENDOLO for solo double bass was composed in 1989. Umberto Eco's book Il Pendolo di Foucault served as inspiration. The work consists of four contrasting movements, each highlighting a particular aspect of the double bass's capabilities. The first movement (Allegro) has a driving rhythm. The second movement (Lento Misterioso) makes use of double bass harmonics to express a sweet and enchanting atmosphere. The third (Scherzando) and fourth movements (Angoscioso) flow seamlessly into each other, utilising various sound possibilities of the double bass (including percussion effects).
