text
THE QUEEN WITHOUT A COUNTRY was composed on commission from Muziektheater Transparant, based on the book of the same name by Paul Verrept.
The premiere at the Summer of Antwerp in August 2014 was followed by 15 performances in a special location (Hangar) in Hoboken near Antwerp, and an international tour in 2014-2015.
This beautiful story is about the great human emotions. Wim Henderickx does not have the singers sing the text, but gives them a wordless language. The actress Marie Vinck narrated the text, which is used as a voice-over. Four singers, two percussionists and Jorrit Tamminga's electronics provide intoxicating and ritualistic music.
It is a family performance (from 8 years old), with music that is understandable, stimulating and rich in contrast. Ethereal, melodic passages alternate with rhythmically driving and ethnically inspired music.
In this production, the composer collaborated for the second time with director Wouter Van Looy (Muziektheater Transparant), see also Void from 2007. A production of Muziektheater Transparant, in coproduction with Zomer Van Antwerpen, Concertgebouw Bruges, Operadagen Rotterdam, Parktheater Eindhoven and Silbersee.
