text
OM was composed in 1992 on commission from BAP - Sabam.
The work consists of five movements that flow into each other attacca.
The basic idea behind this composition is the mystical, Buddhist primordial sound (om), which Eastern monks recite and repeat continuously in their prayers and chants.
Wim Henderickx combined this tone (our C sharp) with four other tones (F, G, A flat, C) which, according to tradition, are said to have healing properties.
This fairly consonant group of notes was the seed for a composition bathed in a meditative atmosphere, also brought about by the soft nuances and homogeneous timbre with the typical blending of the instruments' timbres.
The work is partly aleatoric. The exact metrical notation was replaced by a real-time indication to separate periods from each other. Within these time blocks, the performers are reasonably free.
