text
DROOMBEELDEN (Dream Images) was composed in 1988 and was inspired by the surrealist paintings of Paul Delvaux.
As the title suggests, inspiration for the work was a dream, in which oboe, bassoon and piano converse freely in a rich dialogue.
The first part consists of a slow Lento, followed by a more vigorous Furioso.
The title of the second part, Misterioso, describes the sombre atmosphere.
In the third part Quasi Rubato, the oboe and bassoon take turns as soloist, accompanied by the piano. A varied and evocative assortment of gongs and chimes are suggested.
The last part of this work is in contrast to the preceding music. The Allegro Marcato is dominated by an obsessive rhythmical beat.
The piece ends with a Lento, reminiscent of the opening music.
