text
IN DEEP SILENCE I was composed in 1998 on commission from the Tromp Music Competition in Eindhoven.
It is the first in a series of intimate chamber music works in which silence and tranquillity have been important sources of inspiration. The poetic, almost impressionistic character is typical of these works.
IN DEEP SILENCE I consists of nine movements that flow into each other without interruption. Various guitar techniques are integrated into the work without, however, seeking mere effects.
In certain passages, the influence of traditional Spanish music, such as flamenco, is noticeable. At other times, the sound world of contemporary Japanese music and Zen philosophy has been a major source of inspiration.
Wim Henderickx has, however, attempted to compose as idiomatically as possible for the guitar with its extremely refined sound possibilities.
