text
Like Henderickx's concerto for percussion RAGA I and the viola concerto RAGA III, this orchestral work RAGA II is part of a cycle of several works inspired by Indian raga.
This composition from 1995 was commissioned by the Beethoven Academy.
The work, which was given the subtitle Tombeau, is based on a morning raga.
A raga is associated with a certain mood. This morning raga (TODI) is a 7-note sequence that exudes an atmosphere of seriousness and sadness, while at the same time being lovingly intended.
The motivation to write a raga stems from Wim Henderickx's keen interest in Eastern spirituality.
The composition consists of two large sections: a slow movement and a fast movement. The latter ends after a climax in a fading, ethereal coda.
The work is characterised by the superimposition of different, sometimes complex structures.
The composer uses a classical orchestra, supplemented by a trombone, a harp and additional percussion.
