text
SKRIET was composed in 1993 on commission from the KUL (Catholic University of Leuven). In 2010, Wim Henderickx also created a version for concert band.
It is inspired by the painting The Scream by the Norwegian expressionist Edvard Munch. It deals with the fear and loneliness of man in a nature that offers no comfort.
The following quote is taken from Edvard Munch's diary: I was walking along the road with two friends - then the sun went down - the sky suddenly turned blood red - I stopped, leaning exhausted on the fence - above the blue-black fjord and the city lay blood and tongues of fire - my friends walked on and I stood still, trembling with fear - and I felt a great, infinite scream go through nature.
