Wim Henderickx composed the original version of Harp Concertino for harp and orchestra in 2018, commissioned by La Monnaie/de Munt.
This work received its world premiere in February 2019 with the Symphony Orchestra of La Monnaie, conductor Alain Altinoglu and harpist Agnès Clément at Bozar in Brussels.
It is inspired by the Book of Revelation, the last book of the Bible, and also by Beethoven's Fifth and Sixth Symphonies, both of which were performed alongside this world premiere.
The first movement of Harp Concertino begins hesitantly, introverted and searching, based on the main theme of Beethoven's Sixth Symphony. The second movement is a fiery allegro with rhythmic bass cells, referring to the pithy motif from Beethoven's Fifth Symphony.
The harp is used as the protagonist, as a connection between these two worlds (the spiritual and the intellectual). Not only as a colouristic, dreamy instrument, as is often the case, but also as an enormously powerful instrument with many expressive and virtuoso possibilities.
In 2019, Wim Henderickx also composed a version for harp, strings and percussion, a version for harp and electronics and a version for harp & ensemble:
