text
Adana was composed in 2016 for the occasion of the Golden Label Career Award that Wim Henderickx received from Klassiek Centraal, a web newspaper about classical and contemporary music. He wrote a ragini (mini raga) for two musicians from the HERMESensemble, flute and viola, and he played the percussion part himself.
Adana is a raga symbolically associated with late evening; it was an important raga in 17th-century Indian music.
The electronics consist of the main notes of the mode, based on a microtonal tone series (raga), typical of the music of the Middle East and India. Compare it to a tempura in Indian music.
Wim Henderickx previously wrote a RAGA cycle for orchestra: Raga I, II and III. The Antwerp Symphony Orchestra (formerly deFilharmonie) recorded these works on CD in 1999 with Grant Llewellyn as conductor.
ADANA was a preliminary study for Revelations for music theatre, which he composed on commission from Muziektheater Transparant, with its world premiere in April 2017.
