CRUCIFIXUS

for mixed choir (8 voices)

CRUCIFIXUS for mixed choir was composed in 2003 in commission of Ex Tempore with Florian Heyerick as conductor.

This composition was inspired by the ‘Crucifixus’ from the ‘Selva Morale e Spirituale’ by Claudio Monteverdi.
Wim Henderickx tried to use the same structure and rhythmical course of his work.
The pitch material of this work is based on his own modal composition techniques.
A nine tone mode is the basic material for this composition.

One can notice a clear evolution in the esthetics, starting with the musical language of Monteverdi evolving into the composers' own esthetic sound idiom.

The end of the composition is characterised by floating quarter tone oscillations combined with a serial arranged solo melody.
All this clearly refers to the fascination of the composer for non-western music.
